Gene
Roddenberry had the idea for Star Trek in the early 1960's, in
those days and after serving in World War II and as a policeman
in L.A., he became a writer and producer, he finally got the
idea going of Star Trek in 1966 and it was shown on NBC.
This
first show had only a minor repercussion and they actually
thought f cancelling it after its second year but a large number
of letters received from fans allowed a third season to be
produced, even with this effort though, Star Trek was cancelled
after its third season. Nevertheless, in the early 1970's the
show was once more fashionable and an animated series with the
original cast was produced. Since then four more television
series, 10 movies, hundreds of books and magazines and
innumerable internet fan sites like this one have been produced.

Star Trek - The Original Series (also known as TOS)
The original series was shown on NBC from 1966
through 1969.
Setting : 23rd century years 2266 - 2699
3 seasons.
78 episodes.
Ship : USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (Constitution
Class Ship)
The
adventures of this first Federation Crew were under the command
of Captain James T. Kirk and most of the Enterprise crew was
human but other humanoids were on board. Kirk’s inseparable
half-human friend, Commander Spock, was the most notable, as
science officer of the Enterprise his green blood was always
looking for a logical reason for space's biggest mysteries.
The
original crew would have been lost without their passionate
Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Leonard McCoy (Bones for his close
friend Jim Kirk).
The
original Enterprise wouldn't have got through the three seasons
without their Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott , the phrase "I
need more power Scotty" was often heard through the com and his
"Aye Sir" gave the rest of the crew the confidence necessary.
The
helm was masterly taken by Lieutenant Sulu who was always
assisted by the Russian Ensign Pavel Chekow, on weapons and
navigation.
As
well as keeping the crew motivated with her songs Lieutenant
Uhura was in charge of the ship's communications.
This
crew faced many different situations which made them use their
ingenuity and courage to overcome a large variety of mysteries
and many different situations with alien species without
breaking the Prime Directive. They visited many different
planets where they encountered; shape changing monsters,
non-corporal entities and gods and goddesses. Their five year
mission took them ‘boldly to places where no man had gone
before’.

Star Trek
- The Next Generation
The Next Generation was shown from 1987 until
1994.
Setting : 24th century 2364-2370
7 seasons.
178 episodes.
Ship : USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D (Galaxy Class
Ship)

The
Next Generation appeared on television some 20 years after the
Original Series, under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard;
keen explorer and intellectual. Nevertheless, command is
impossible without a good first officer, a "Number One",
Commander William Riker was that man.
Replacing a Vulcan as science officer was difficult but an
android was the perfect option, Lieutenant Commander Data
explores the mysteries of space as he continually tries to be
more human.
The
ship's Counsellor Deanna Troi keeps the ship's crew sane,
although her mother is constantly testing her limits. Warp
engines need a good Chief Engineer so Geordi La Forge was the
ideal man for the job.
Sickbay is always a busy part on a star ship, but Chief Medical
Officer Dr Beverly Crusher has it all in place, although during
one season she was posted at Starfleet Medical and Dr Katherine
Pulaski took over during that season.
It's
quite unusual to find a Klingon on a Starfleet ship but it's
even stranger to find a Klingon as Chief of Security, but the
only Klingon in Starfleet, Lieutenant Worf, was promoted to this
position after the Original Security Chief, Tasha Yar, was
killed in the line of duty.
Many
famous characters found their way onto the Starship Enterprise,
Whoopi Goldberg kept things going in Ten-Forward as well as
counselling her close friend Captain Jean Luc Picard in the
difficult moments when serious decisions had to be taken.
We can't forget either the unexpected appearances of John de
Lancie as Picard's worst nightmare, "Q".

Star Trek - Deep Space Nine (also known as DS9)
Shown from 1992 through 1999.
Setting : 24th century years 2369-2375
7 seasons.
78 episodes.
Ship : Deep Space Nine (Space Station)
Deep
Space Nine was conceived as a companion to the Next Generation.
This series doesn't explore space as the rest of Star Trek, it
concentrates on its characters, their worlds and relationships
and continues on these lines through the entire seven seasons.
One of
the most notorious arcs is the one related to the Dominion War.
A Galactic Conflict which is seen to be handled with great skill
by Captain Benjamin Sisko with the help of his Science Officer
Jadzia Dax who brings a different slant to the show with the
dual identity of the Host Jadzia and the Simbiotic Invertebrate
Dax.
There
are many medical emergencies of many different sources aboard a
Space Station with so many different cultures, this area is
perfectly covered by the Medical Officer Dr. Julian Bashir.
Odo, an
intriguing shape shifting Security Chief keeps everything safe
and under control on the Space Station.
An old
friend from The Next Generation is the Chief Operations Officer,
Miles O'Brien as well as the Stations First Officer Kira Nerys
form the crew. Ah, we can't forget the Ferengi bartender Quark.
Mr.
O'Brien though, isn't the only character from TNG that can be
found on DS9, our Klingon security officer, Lt. Commander Worf,
joins DS9 in the fourth season as Strategic Operations Officer.
Deep
Space Nine was a new focus on the Star Trek saga, many of the
original traditions were broken. It is also based on the
characters and their lives more than on their space mission.

Star Trek - Voyager
Shown from 1995 through 2001.
Setting : 24th century years 2371-2378
7 seasons.
172 episodes.
Ship : USS Voyager - NCC74656
This
fourth series of Star Trek also breaks one of Star Trek
traditions by featuring a female Captain, Kathryn Janeway. The
premier episode shows USS Voyager carried to the Delta Quadrant
with a Maquis Vessel and we find the combined crew of both
stranded ships on Voyager, living together and sharing the
maintenance of their ship on the long way back to the Alpha
Quadrant.
A Star
Trek movie without a Vulcan is "illogical", so the Starfleet
Tactical / Security Officer Tuvok is in charge of the Logical
decisions.
Voyager
gives a new focus to sickbay, Voyager's Doctor is actually a
hologram, an EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram) although with help
from the future he soon begins to go on away-missions.
The
distribution of ranks leaves a Maquis first officer Chakotay.
All the members of the crew though are not from the original 2
ships, Mr Neelix a native of the Delta Quadrant, has many
functions on board: guide / morale officer / cook / handyman ...
The
Chief Engineer is an ex-rebel half-Klingon; B'Elanna Torres.
Communications is in the hands of a recent Academy graduate,
Harry Kim. A slightly rebellious Lieutenant Tom Paris is in
charge of the helm.
One of
the best incorporations to Voyager is a new crew member that
appears in the fourth seasons. The Voyager Collective is
honoured with Seven of Nine a de-assimilated Borg drone.
This
series offers us many new aliens and new civilizations in the
Delta quadrant without forgetting old members of the Star Trek
family such as the Q or the Borg.

Star Trek - Enterprise
Shown from 2001 through 2005.
Setting : 22nd century years 2151-2161
4 seasons.
98 episodes.
Ship : USS Enterprise - NX-01
This
fifth series of Star Trek takes place only 88 years after Zefram
Cochrane's first flight of the Phoenix and first contact with
the Vulcans.
Their
new vessel is a prototype Warp 5 star ship which is sent into
space a few weeks before schedule to return a Klingon who
crashed in Oklahoma on its way to his home world. Even though
the Vulcans tried to throw a spanner in the works, Captain
Archer sets off to Kronos, the Klingon home world.
Enterprise returns to the Original Star Trek idea of seeking out
new life and new civilizations and go into the depths of space.
Vulcans
are obviously involved, the logical second-in-command
Sub-Commander T'Pol is the Vulcan observer and science officer.
With the main body of the crew being human, a Vulcan on board
offers a unique perspective for the crew. Nevertheless, the
Vulcan does have to put her logic to the test with the Chief
Engineer; Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker.
The
armoury officer Lieutenant Malcolm Reed likes all actions to be
done by the book. On this "first" human mission, a translator is
essential and Ensign Hoshi Sato has an incredible time working
out all the new languages she encounters. The helm of this fine
ship is in the hands of Ensign Travis Mayweather, whose long
experience in space cargo gives him insight into many flight
situations.
The other non-human on board Enterprise is Doctor Phlox, a
Denobulan who has his sickbay full of a wide assortment of
exotic drugs, animals, treatments, instruments, strange cultures
and highly unconventional medicine.
