In the beginning of the film the USS Montana (an Ohio class, ballistic missile submarine) sinks near the edge of the Cayman Trough. The submarine sank after an accidental encounter with an unknown object.

Soviet submarines head to the area, a hurricane is also moving in. The quickest way to rescue them is with a Seal team who will be inserted onto an experimental underwater oil platform named Deep Core.

From the same director as (Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens, Titanic ...) this film seems to be a bit of an experiment for James Cameron.

It's a bit hard to decide if the film is a thriller, action film or a sci-fi film. The film has some excellent underwater photography and sequences and great attention is taken to the physics of deep sea diving, although the storyline is very weak.

The supernatural alien mystery doesn't really impress although there are some very good underwater filming scenes done with computer-generated special effects.

This movie is considered a pioneer in visual effects.
