Directed by : Paul Verhoeven

Produced by : Jon Davison

Starring : Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Ronny Cox

Released : 1987 (Orion Pictures)

Country : United States

This futuristic action/sci fi film spawned two sequels, several comic books, multiple video games, two animated series, dozens of action figures and two television series, all featuring a cyborg police officer.

The film is set in a near future, in Detroit. Violent crime is out of control, and the city is in financial ruin. The city contracts OCP - Omni Consumer Products to fund and operate the police department, in effect privatizing it. OCP is not interested in rebuilding Old Detroit but want to replace it with a modern Delta City. Before this large construction project can begin, OCP wishes to end crime in the city, and creates a superhuman law-enforcement agent known as RoboCop.

RoboCop is programmed to follow four prime directives, the first three are comparable to Asimov's Laws of Robotics.

  1. Serve the public trust
  2. Protect the innocent
  3. Uphold the law
  4. Classified - Never oppose an OCP officer

Paul Verhoeven initially considered Rutger Hauer, as well as Michael Ironside, for the role of RoboCop. Allegedly Arnold Schwarzenegger  was at one point in talks to do the film, but Verhoeven eventually dismissed all three on the basis that the bulky RoboCop costume would require a light-built actor to work with. Peter Weller was subsequently cast as Murphy/RoboCop and prepared for the role by studying bird movements in a padded baseball suit.

Directed by : Irvin Kershner

Produced by : Jon Davison

Starring : Belinda Bauer, John Glover, Peter Weller

Released : 1990 (Orion Pictures Corporation)

Country : United States

The main plot of RoboCop 2 is the title character's struggle to regain the humanity that many characters in the film felt he lost when he was turned into RoboCop. However, in contrast to the dominant main plot of the first film, the story in RoboCop 2 is mainly driven by a number of sub-plots.

Directed by Irvin Kershner known for The Empire Strikes Back and Never Say Never Again.

One sub-plot, introduced at the beginning of the movie, concerns the consequences of RoboCop's realization of his former identity, and his impotent attempt to reach out to his family. Having found out where they moved after he was killed, he merely drives by their house day after day, greatly distressing his former wife.

The overarching plot of the movie concerns the attempt by Omni Consumer Products (OCP) to contrive the default of the debt of the old City of Detroit. It plans to take over the city government, demolish the old city, and put up a Delta City, in its place.

Robocop - The Series

RoboCop: The Series is a television series made in 1994 with Richard Eden taking the part of Robocop. Made for children there is no graphic violence which was the main pull of the movies.   Rather than killing criminals, RoboCop now has several non-lethal alternatives, which ensure that certain villains can be recurring.

The series was filmed in Canada, and each episode was one hour long. Twenty-two episodes were made, but the series was not renewed for a second season. One of the reasons was the expense involved: some episodes cost as much as a million dollars.

The pilot was actually adapted from the original RoboCop 2 script.

Many of the episodes were explicitly critical of conservative and libertarian policies, i.e. the privatization of health care and welfare.

The ironic handling of many of the negative aspects of modern urban life added a consistent element of black comedy.

A second series was planned but due to poor ratings with the first series, the second series was cancelled and the whole programme was axed.

Robocop - The Animated Series

RoboCop: The Animated Series is an was produced in the 1980s by Marvel Animation, and is based on the character and events of the movie Robocop. It was adapted to children, the more notable changes were the removal of bullets (replaced by laser weapons) and a more science fiction setting.

The series follows on from the movie, with Alex Murphy still fighting to save the city of Old Detroit from assorted rogue elements, and on occasion, fighting to reclaim aspects of his humanity.

The cartoon dealt with themes of racism, prejudice at work, environmental espionage, and reprogrammed assassins. These all show the series had darker scripts than one would find when compared to the 1999 Robocop : Alpha Commando.

The series also had a high budget. The title sequence even features a brief animated variation on Murphy being gunned down.

RoboCop: Alpha Commando is an animated series based on the character of Robocop, it was the second animated version of the character, following on from Robocop: The Animated Series. The series premiered in 1998 and ran until February 1999.

It was the final animated series from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Animation.

The series is set in the year 2030, and deals with RoboCop being reactivated after five years offline to assist a federal high-tech group, Alpha Division in their vigilance and struggle against the forces of evil whenever that may be, globally or nationally.

The series shared many of the same writers who had contributed to the 1980s animated series, but had even less in common with the movies or television films that it was based on, including the first animated series.

Robocop - Prime Directives

RoboCop: Prime Directives (PD) is a TV miniseries release in 2000.  It is based on the original movie.  The series consisted of four feature length movies:

  • Dark Justice
  • Meltdown
  • Resurrection
  • Crash and Burn.

Prime Directives takes place ten years after the first RoboCop movie and ignores the sequels or anything that followed.

RoboCop is outdated and tired.  Delta City (formerly Detroit) is now considered the safest place on Earth, and he is no longer viewed as particularly necessary.

Meanwhile, OCP (on the verge of bankruptcy) is taken over by a scheming executive, Damian Lowe, who manages to murder the entire board of directors. To bring OCP back, he plans to use an artificial intelligence called SAINT to automate the entire city.
