The New Voyages are fan-made, non-profit episodes of Star Trek which carry on from TOS.

If you haven’t all ready seen these first three episodes of the trekkie, home-made Star Trek, I know what you’re thinking – no way. Now these are real sad trekkies that have made these, well, that’s at least what I thought and it was what put me off watching them. There is a certain amount of geekiness about making these things, I mean, if I told my girlfriend I was going to make an episode of Star Trek (and not make any profit) she would be off quicker than Bill Shatner’s wig in the shower. Okay, women are also involved in this project and can be just as trekkie as any bloke, but even so you wouldn’t catch me taking the Star Trek world so far, but that was till I watched them.

Being a bit bored one afternoon, and having downloaded, I mean bought, and watched everything Star Trek thing possible, I went for it; I downloaded the New Voyages. The first positive thing was the speed at which they downloaded, my utorrent was smoking, speeds never seen before, so a whole episode of about forty minutes came down like a shuttle pod in an ion storm (whatever that is). After joining all the files together into one file to make one first episode, I sat down and watched it and I was most impressed.

We have the chance to see the same old characters from TOS if not somewhat uglier, fatter and a bit more wooden. Our new actors are a bit on the amateur side and are by no means Hollywood lookers, but that’s just great, I’m sure Starfleet lets in a few overweighters as well. In fact, it almost makes it more realistic. It’s true that some of the acting is just a bit wooden and it’s times like this when you realise that actors really do know their trade, but it doesn’t take away from the great special effects, all done very well in a light-hearted way and the more than decent plots.

If you don’t take them too seriously and you don’t stare at the incredible wigs (but there’s nothing new there for TOS fans) too much, then you’ll enjoy them. I recommend them, and they’re free. What more do you want? Well you’ve get special guest appearances by old TOS crew like … you’ll have to watch them.
